Erma Hayman House: A Foundation of History and Community
The Erma Hayman House stands as a rare and important remnant of Boise’s River Street neighborhood, preserving the story of an underrepresented community amidst modern redevelopment. The rebrand needed to respectfully honor the Hayman family’s legacy, nod to the working-class and mid-century character of the home, and integrate seamlessly into the Boise Arts and History historic site brand architecture.
Design Approach
The brand identity was designed to reflect the era and significance of the house while ensuring it remained engaging and accessible for contemporary audiences. The logo, designed in collaboration with Sam Fischer, captures the modest yet resilient architecture, using clean, intentional lines to mirror the home’s sandstone brick foundation and distinctive form. A carefully crafted shadow element symbolizes the house’s history, while its strong, clear shape ensures its ongoing relevance and importance in Boise’s evolving landscape.
The visual system extends beyond the logo to include patterns, icons, and typography inspired by mid-century design. Elements such as floral wallpaper motifs and architectural details bring warmth and authenticity to the identity, reinforcing the house’s connection to the past while remaining inviting to present-day visitors.
Outcome
The branding positions the Erma Hayman House as an iconic and meaningful historic site, preserving the stories of the diverse community that once thrived in the River Street neighborhood. By balancing historical integrity with a modern, structured design, the brand ensures the house remains a recognized, respected, and educational resource for generations to come.
